Weight loss and the athletic spirit

When you’re overweight: there is the you that tethers your mind and emotions about your body to your body, holding it down, and vice versa.

Then there is the you capable of sensing your separateness from your own body that respects what the body can do if allowed.

This is your spirit that can untie your body from the current emotional state to let it move. It’s kind of like taking your dog for a walk when you feel half asleep. Or letting the parking brake off of your car. Or stepping up during an emergency.

The part of you who rises above the emotion-shackled body and body-shackled emotional state is the athletic spirit, the worker’s ethic, and the artists inspiration. This you is capable of adaptive training.

Turns out, freed from the body-mind and its every notion about the body (from aches to analyses) the emotions will serve the athletic spirit. Once moving, these two will lead the mind and body to freedom and greater well being.

True independence

All words have a limited purpose, “for now.” “Independence” is that way. It is needed to get free of false supports, or false assumptions that lead to false needs. False needs erode time, health, and treasure. They tend to be sedimentary and inefficient for us.

We are wise to do an Independence Inventory from time to time to identify the ideas, notions, feelings, things, and habits that have settled in around us that are not aligned with the truest, most honorable, most loving, and most righteous (not self-righteous, but righteous by others) person each of us aspires to be. The “Look-Up” YouTube video of my previous post illustrates a thing from which we need independence.

Why try? Because what we aspire to be is what is in our heart.

Adaptive training seeks to adapt mind and body in service to our true heart, to our reason for being here. This means letting go of falseness, wherever found.

Free of false things, we are better prepared for interdependence in a way that will benefit, not harm others. We may “get up and walk.”

Like farming land, this farming of the heart, mind, and body is the purpose of training the mind and body to find harmony with the decisive, innocent spirit which we were given as children.

As I get older, I see that spirit of decisive innocence to clear the way for genuine love. Instantly, reflecting on this, trying to re-establish harmony with that divine spark, it is easy for me to see all my defects brought to light. My selfishness.

It is then I remember I must stand again, find my heart, and work the fields of this earthly testing ground another day.

Yesterday was a sound strength training day, and I found myself reflecting on this thought stream from a recent hike, simplified below:

Truth is so effectual, it needs no anger, pride, fear, or weaponized delivery to be heard. It only needs the telling absent those things, and if possible in love and humility, to resound, reverberate, be received, taken to heart, and possibly passed down for generations.”

As I reflected on this, I realized it has great potential for adaptive training, that is, slipping the punches to self and others that come with anger and fear attached to:

(1) the avoidance of some truth about self, or

(2) fearful or vengeful anger at those who are a source of injustices toward others, self, and worst of all, those we love.

How often does truth go untold or told to shut-ears because the mixture of fear and anger allowed to crowd out the simple, powerful, healing, even nucleus-changing truth?

The truth in matters of all sizes may be scorched, burned, or concealed in the fire and smoke of passions that crowd it, from fear to anger to pride to disgust.

And yet, the simple truth, said, in love and humility, will free the teller as much as those who can hear that truth told. And each one of us will be able to hear it when this untarnished, nourishing truth arrives.

Imagine what energy comes from a body, mind, and spirit un-fettered by fear of the truth, embracing the truth, and working truth through the whole being with every footstep, movement, and every labor.

Look at how truth-to-self was able to do the unexpectedly unthinkably powerful:

By writing this post, I am not claiming I could do what these two women did in their grace and forgiveness, in part imparted through many, in both cases from higher places spacious enough to deliver freedom from the intrinsic assault of traumatic injustice.

I don’t claim any foresight in the field of forgiveness, but I do see a simple truth  grasped personally by these two women which makes me wonder…

If much simpler truths about self, or what we witness in the misuse of power were not sources of fear, were unburdened by anger, and unpolluted by pride; if simple truth were told in love however love would wisely tell the simple truths, how much harm, hurt, suffering, and injustice could be extinguished, prevented, and instead nourishing relationships  and virtues grown instead?

Meaning of: “Let Go”

The mind and body become attached to many things, some of which are not good to be attached to.

The spirit, however, has the power to withdraw energy and desire from these attachments, and order the body and mind to be still.

The spirit can withdraw power and consent from the grasping mind and body. You thereby, “let go.”

The spirit also has the impelling power to strike out with decision. It can brace our minds and bodies to follow a wise path.

The spirit has the innate power to await the whole truth, to suspend judgment, to gather information, and to withdraw energy from fearful reactions to anyone, everyone, and everything.

The spirit has the power to be clear and precise.

To Poets in Motion or Not

Water

There are times you may not consciously realize that you need or want to renew your relationship to water in your training life.

Yet water and its properties are forces of nature that are part of your physical, mental, and if you will, spiritual being.

Five Rounds with the Heavy Bag

Yesterday’s training in the Mind-Body-Sport dimension.

Continuous punching is key. Stay moving in between rounds. For progressions, increase punching rate, power, intensity, speed throughout rounds. This gradually warms the joints and muscles, taking more impact as you go. If you don’t know how to punch, boxing gyms are good about teaching fundamentals.

Wrap the hands well to support wrists and cushion the bones of the hand. Snug, not circulation-cutting. The wraps I have are dummy-proof, with text on them saying “this side down,” a thumb loop, and self-secured with Velcro (TM). Put heavy bag or other striking gloves on, set your timer and have at it.

Today is Mountain. The plan is interval hiking-running. Will bring a camera and record the high points. Let me know with comments if you prefer detailed trip reports, or just highlights.

Are you an athlete? Let’s talk about that.

I remember school, that grouping of children by statute in which arbitrary determinations of “jock” versus “gangster” versus “freak” versus “nerd” identified people according to the Plato’s Cave rule.

Have you concluded that you are not an athlete because of this caste-filing system? I believe many people have, especially those who drop out of physical conditioning, or who struggle with believing they belong in a training life of value.

Mass society, as Alvin Toffler the futurist pointed out in his “Previews and Premises,” and “Wave” books, has been reaching its limits over several decades and is forced to change. Mass approaches to the jobs society needs done are losing efficacy to nimbler, more adaptive, and custom modes of human endeavor.

An example: Mass culture’s investors swear to us that mass agriculture is necessary to support the populations it has made possible, what I call an AB-Argument (Addiction-Bureaucracy meme). But that system is changing what food is.

Change happens slowly under the weight of Addiction-Bureaucracy in part because bureaucracy demands consultation and control in that change. However, there are powerful sea changes to speed these processes along from time to time.

In Fitness, Adaptive Training is such a movement. It can take us from the mass commercial approaches to training to an individualized path. Community lives best by temporary confederacies of good purpose, and less by growing, monolithic, robotic authority. The central power theme with high adult to teen ratios provokes the arbitrary identifications like “jock,” “nerd,” “slut,” and other caste system labels that the very teachers it employs fight a futile battle to correct. While this may have been unplanned, authority can use these limiting legends to keep control over high ratios of students to coaches / teachers, etc.

There are Prom Queens and Homecoming Kings and MVPs and scholars by ritual popularity, however, not always by merit of character. And everywhere we hear the word “pride” credited with the wins. I realize this is a commonly used term that many people use to mean love of one’s team, school spirit, and  loyalty to their success. But using the word pride to describe those things is off-kilter. That’s because the same word means a narcissistic desire to hold one of the caste system titles, whatever it takes. That is the trend we see in professional sports.

From my perspective you are an athlete if you mentally and physically condition yourself to excel in your sport, art, work, ethical, and spiritual life no matter your age. To deny any part of one’s development for the more easily developed physical talents is to set-up the highly trained body and mind for a descent into character-rot.

An adaptive training life continually responds not to the rituals that flatter athletes, but to the greater purposes that give mortality its highest meaning for each one, and for all. The rituals may be part of the mix, but they do not govern the athlete. The athlete chooses his or her areas of endeavor, and leads her or himself to excel for the sake of seasoning the community with excellence in service to a community of persons, not to an industry or institution.

To serve people is to be a leader. To serve an industry or institution without remembering “by and for the people,” is to become a materialist willing to value things, wealth, and glory over people.

This leads me to sever this piece into two parts. The next part is on the use of the word “Pride” in athletics and other human endeavors, and how that backfires even when well-intentioned.

Inner Strength, Outer Confidence

Many say outer-confidence behaviors, even their pretense, will soak-in eventually to transform our inner lives. In sports, this is the performance-self toughness of the Loehr-Jansen-Evert book, Mental Toughness Training for Sports.

Others say, concentrate on inner strength, and all else will follow. This is an ancient principle passed down through the wisdom of many disciplines developed from antiquity. Dr. Loehr may call this our true-self, strengthened.

Either way, personal strengthening takes time. Perhaps using both ways shortens the time.

Outer-confidence may be a personal fear deterrent as we go among predator-types, i.e. those who may take advantage of our real or perceived weaknesses: intellectual, physical, social, etc. They’re out there, but probably not as often as we fear. So many fight their own battles, as Plato wrote in his case for kindness. Aggression or predatory behavior is often rooted in fear in the other. This reminds me of a lesson covered in Dan Millman’s “Way of the Peaceful Warrior.”

In some sense, outer-confidence is plumage. In another, it reduces self-distracting fear, improving our focus on what we are doing. It is not-bleeding, or sucking-up the bloodied nose, or swallowing the broken lip’s blood among sharks. And so it has real tactical value. ‘Don’t let them see you sweat.’

However, inner strength weathers a shark frenzy, and defeats the sharks. It is hyper intelligent, perpetually determined, and immortal. It defeats, deters, fools, or evades them altogether (more often the latter). It is the source of total focus. It determines what we do, not how we look. It is the final arbiter in our contribution to outcomes. Inner strength eventually joins with outer confidence, and multiplies it.

Observe, journal, test, temper, and learn. We are not alone, and each of us has a good purpose for being related to the rest.

If you suffer inner torment over your weight, shape, or features, I offer the following:

Do not look to the body of your vehicle to get where you want to go.

It’s all in the engine. Clean and prime it with only good fuel and keep your fluid levels topped off. Remove unnecessary junk from spark plugs, mental and physical.

Start your engine.

When it is warm, make some trips. Some test runs.

Work out the bugs gradually, one at a time. Talk to other owners, read some owner’s manuals, and with excellent focus, tend to the priority fixes right on down the line.

Be encouraged the analogy to a car stops there.

When you focus on the engine within you, it will transform the body without need of welding, primer, cements, or paints.

You Deserve a Rewrite: Sustainable Fitness During Super Storms

This campaign season as pols postured for position during their power-tries we had a chance to see them forced to adapt to the circumstances of real life despite their target-fixation on self-empowerment.

When hurricane Sandy hammered NY, the red hats of political infighting came off and the blue hats of First- Responding went on.

What made them credible at the scene? Here they were locked in a power-seeking campaign, self-aggrandizing, framing facts to fit them, and suddenly they must confront real life and real people by flying into a disaster area. Every move they made was under scrutiny. How could anyone believe they were genuine?

Eastern Seaboard folks were largely into a collective vibe dealing with the storm confronting them. Flooding them. In come the pols. “Yeeeah, Right,” the person on the street may have thought, trudging through water and hearing news of the pols coming to town.

There is a contrast in perceived importance of dealing with real life versus dealing with personal ambition about real life. For the people hit by the storm, the pols were reduced in importance, unless they rolled up sleeves or used their power to help.

Similarly, for our children, our elders, our friends, coworkers, vexed supervisors or anyone we undertook to serve, were we to take an hour to train during their hour of need, they would probably take a dim view of it. No one cares how well trained we are until they know how much we care.

On the flip side, for the pols sold on the importance of their respective campaigns, when they heard of the disastrous super storm, they probably each said internally, “What? You have got to be kidding me. At the last minute, a Super Storm?” Yet there it was. Reality hit and they had to adapt.

They had to drop campaigning and help in some way. And they had to be sincere. People can sense the opposite.

That is how it is for us in our training lives. We have plans, have ambitions, and the desire to do more and be more in the big picture of our training lives. Then life happens. And we must ask ourselves, what were we preparing for with all of that training? Will it help others in their hours of need?

The sooner we drop our plans and embrace our service to others, the more meaningful our missed training time becomes. Yet we are not swooping in for a sound byte to face the needs of those we serve in our daily lives, we are going in with conviction, commitment, and the other qualities that training has kindled in us.

Engaging the life that happens to interrupt our training with decisiveness and commitment will improve what training we can work in by exponents, and will brace our mental attitude for future progress beyond measure. It will also clear our consciences to plumb quality out of short intervals.

Until we tell ourselves the truth about the priorities of our duties, what we train for, the degree of training we will allow ourselves and accept, we have not adapted fully to our circumstances. Until we adapt, we harbor an incompleteness inside about both our training and what we were training for, ultimately.

Politicians probably feel something similar in their temptation to not fully adapt, to fake it, and fake a response to a crisis in the middle of a campaign. But they can’t afford it. When they get to the impact zone and see the laboring faces, suddenly, they have to get honest very quickly with the people they meet.

Adaptive fitness recognizes our convergence of needs and honestly says, this isn’t ideal but I own it. I’m going to admit it, accept it, and see how I may make a shorter training evolution work well in the circumstances. It is good because it is responsible. It is good because it makes us better at handling the onslaught.

When we think and train adaptively while serving others it can be focused and high quality because there is no internal guilt associated with it. We’ve accepted an underdog training situation. Expectations are off. We are free to surprise ourselves. We can hit our stepping stones out of the onslaught.

By so doing we can improve our mental and bodily constitution to see through the onslaught, and when our training life gets back to normal, we will be happy that we considered even the small training opportunities as genuine. We weren’t training snobs. We were citizen-family people-volunteer-worker-athletes.

There will come the windfalls later, the fair weather, and spacious times.

Art and Run

Every sport is also an art, and when our performance becomes artistic, we are excelling.

In my sport this morning I worked through movements that challenged my ranges of motion in the muscles and structures surrounding my hips and shoulders. I observed myself in and out of alignment with efficient bodily structure, and felt the implications for balance. I challenged myself, and made some improvements in form, technique and movement. While there are scores of other movements I want to improve on and excel in within my current focus, I am pleased with any progress. My art and sport challenges me with movements that are not part of my normal base conditioning and training.

After this experience, I went out and ran three miles and some tenths in my Altras. I was more aware of my running form following a session in my sport this morning. I also found myself at a brisker pace than I expected after having denied myself running for three days.
