Sustainable Fitness Must Be Sowed, Worked, Nourished, and Harvested Season to Season

The question is not whether any one of us is fat or thin. The question is what are you doing? What am I doing?

Truth shines bright and hurts our eyes at first. As we warm to the fire of truth-told-to-self, inner resolve lifts our spirits to retrain ourselves to health, function, and ever greater performance in the physical life we lead and want to lead. We can do a little, then a little more, then a little more, and before long, we’re gliding, then flying, and one day, we may soar.

More and more often, when we ask the question “what am I doing” we will find ourselves training, eating, drinking, and sleeping wisely. We will find ourselves improving at all things physical that we want to do.

True independence

All words have a limited purpose, “for now.” “Independence” is that way. It is needed to get free of false supports, or false assumptions that lead to false needs. False needs erode time, health, and treasure. They tend to be sedimentary and inefficient for us.

We are wise to do an Independence Inventory from time to time to identify the ideas, notions, feelings, things, and habits that have settled in around us that are not aligned with the truest, most honorable, most loving, and most righteous (not self-righteous, but righteous by others) person each of us aspires to be. The “Look-Up” YouTube video of my previous post illustrates a thing from which we need independence.

Why try? Because what we aspire to be is what is in our heart.

Adaptive training seeks to adapt mind and body in service to our true heart, to our reason for being here. This means letting go of falseness, wherever found.

Free of false things, we are better prepared for interdependence in a way that will benefit, not harm others. We may “get up and walk.”

Like farming land, this farming of the heart, mind, and body is the purpose of training the mind and body to find harmony with the decisive, innocent spirit which we were given as children.

As I get older, I see that spirit of decisive innocence to clear the way for genuine love. Instantly, reflecting on this, trying to re-establish harmony with that divine spark, it is easy for me to see all my defects brought to light. My selfishness.

It is then I remember I must stand again, find my heart, and work the fields of this earthly testing ground another day.

The change of seasons puts the micro-bugs into overdrive. Are our immune systems ready?

For those who have undertaken the training life, this is an important, if confusing question.

It has to do with the Paradox of Success. When we feel fit and well, we become susceptible to undermining the behaviors we lived to get there: exercising, eating right, sleeping well, and feeding relationships (filling buckets).

Success invites a temporary sense of immortality mania. In this state, we tend to over-extend ourselves at the expense of sleep, rest, exercise, downtime, relationships, and soon, wellness. Then we get sick.

If we can early-detect our sense of mania after successes, this is our first sign of coming under a spell of over-extension. So it is with our successes.

Yet when you consider that inflammation and upper-respiratory mucous generation (mostly against nasal passage infecting viruses) are immune system responses, some survey reviews of a few years ago suggest that bolstering the immune system will only increase inflammatory, super-charged immune systems. The Federal Executive Institute Alumni Association (FEIAA) consists of graduates of professional education programs of the Federal Executive Institute, serving federal government executives building on their talents, skills, and abilities for public service. It’s area alumni are gathering in Denver for a reunion and refresher tomorrow.

As part of those FEIAA proceedings I’ve been privileged to facilitate a conversation about my book Farm Your Training Day: An American Dream of Sustainable Personal Fitness. I will also sign-off on copies of the book for those in attendance who add it to their training libraries. I am looking forward to learning more about the adaptive training needs of these busy professionals.

I have Michael Anderson to thank for the privilege of meeting with his fellow alumni, and hope that everyone in attendance will come away with something permanent on which to build and improve as leaders of their own training lives.

After the event I’d like to post what I learned from a discussion of adaptive training with a group of dedicated professionals whose lives are quite busy. Public service can be an intense challenge, and work-life balance will figure into our conversation. More soon!

For your local recreation centers, the price is right, the drop-in terms flexible, and often the equipment is very good. As part of your multidimensional training life, using good form at your local recreation center weight room may trigger your next gain in physical fitness. Every investment counts. You don’t need a shiny, expensive club to excel in weight training.

Paid $5 and a few cents to train at a local rec center last night. It was a great investment, not very crowded, and time-saving.

Mind and body thrive on early-to-bed, early-to-rise sleep schedules. This should help!

Another club, says the article, offers dance parties in the daytime. What a great way to be physical without losing sleep, and to encourage family bonding in a healthy, moving activity. It’s encouraging to see a few businesses wise-up and introduce the notion of family friendly dance venues. This was once a routine rural family and community bonding event in small town America.In Australia I know they have “sports clubs” which are recreation centers really, with social gathering opportunities for all ages too.

Now imagine dance rooms with direct sunlight, fans, cool mist machines, and electrolytic drinks for healthy Vitamin D, good hydration, and a tan.

The French gave us the statue of Liberty. Maybe they’re liberating an industry that has become too jaded, opening our memory to the dance halls of old.

Simple Personal Executive Power

There is more than meets the eye here.

Consider all of the decisions, words, or actions we may have used this beautiful button on had it popped-up in real time.

From a self-training perspective, this button could cut-off decisions to eat, drink, think, do, or say things that would waste our health, damage our bodies, or steal time from more important priorities, be it relationship, work, physical training, or others. In a limited life span here on Earth, such a button pushed at the right times could save exponential time. That saved time could then find spot-on opportunities for excellence.

This is not just because of better opportunities found, but because we avoid entanglements that would steal yet more time from the most important things.

The cancel button in the picture is blue, a color that suggests that it is perfectly OK to cancel something. To make it red creates negative emotional associations.

Perhaps the “Send” button should be red, as impulsively or accidentally sent messages burn more bridges than cancelling messages does.

Defining Terms to Get Results

“Weight-loss” or “weight-gain” are too abstract to help us perceive what is involved in the overweight casualties of the New Millennium.

Truer terms are “Weight-shifting” and “Mind-Body War.” For-profit, the Weight-Shifters strategically bomb us with ill-messaging about food, good-times, and ourselves. We are taught that we are significant because we are brand-supporters. Tactically, we are disarmed by bright lights, warm colors, and enticing photos of food and drink.

Crazily, the image of ourselves as fit can even make us indulge, thinking we can “take it” at the drive-through, or that “fit people eat here.” We are guerrilla stricken during commutes, when we are tired, rushed, feeling deprived, getting in late, and grappling with daily problems. We are “too tired to fix dinner.”

Yet there is hope. There are natural and organic grocers, and grocery sections. There are often free samples of healthy fare at the grocery stores to ease the urgency of hunger. Or just buy a small green juice first, and sip while shopping.

Our Appetites

Our appetites are the most vulnerable, non-critical, and primitive pressure points in this weight-shifting war. Each assault exploits the tensions of the busy-life schema that put us in urgently hungry states of the primitive brain.

Each attack, and each battle lost, takes a permanent toll. The hit-and-run nature of the anti-health raids impels us to hit-and-run ourselves with the false notion that it will only be “this time.”

Mind and Emotions

A sober, stoic war-footing toward these messaging phenomena would help galvanize and unify our minds and emotions against these false-comfort attacks. Think about who you want to be when attacked, not what you want right then.

False comfort is fizzy, melted, hot, salty, sweet, fatty, calming, and ultimately, a Dopamine-dumping chemical frenzy to ease our tension, cull our cognitive dissonance, and crush our health. It also drains our wallets.

True comfort is being truly free and under control of our life direction. Shopping and preparation burns calories, and deepens our relationship to fresher, purer food.

Body

When we eat the refined, processed, sodium-filled, grease-bombs that explode in our tummies and calm our nerves, we are descending into sickness. Thinking the situation through is not so easy.

Thinking outside of our bodily frenzies is the beginning of freedom. Detaching a part of our higher minds to float above our animal-drives can help us become self-aware of our total beings, not just our Pavlovian-Lowest Common Denominator. We can trump our immediate appetites.

Conclusion

Adaptive fitness assumes that eating, drinking, and sleeping are self-trainable behaviors every bit as much as exercise and sport are trainable. We can eat, drink, and sleep in accord with who and how we want to be.

Physical training is where you go, and how that changes you. It is directly experiential, yet also relative to other life endeavors.It transcends the physical.

In the world, water flows cascade down steep inclines. The forces move according to structures and properties  of water, gravity, air, angular rock, and so on. The rocks are changed, and the water does countless things on the way down. By much work, the water is purified. Then, one day it evaporates, leaves the Earth and joins the clouds. I believe we are like that.

Afraid to Change

This is a very important post. Here is a wonderful human being, a brother or sister, a son or daughter, a father or mother, a friend; standing at a lookout near the front after fighting a day’s battle. Good for the writer.

On fitness, health, and training, here is the truth: we will face the battle of the day whether we are fit or not. We will be subject to it whether we fight or not.

The proposition of lifelong training discipline is to adapt to the battle of the day so we improve and excel at meeting objectives that matter to us. That we would be more present and capable to serve loved ones, friends, neighbors, and more, because we are fitter.

It is harder when one is alone, without a purpose in mind, to find a reason to stand and participate in the battle engaging both body and mind. When someone we love becomes an important reason to train, exercise, and improve, we get traction and toughen-up. It seems paradoxical that something so soft as love toughens us to live well.

I’m really–times 500–afraid of change. Why is change necessary? Here I am, tiredOfBeingOldAndTired, needing to lose  30–40 pounds or suffer and die, and I won’t change! I always say to myself: After this candy bar, I won’t eat candy bars anymore.  Uh humm. Right.

I read something last week, which totally applies here:

Pain is part of Change, Change is the price of Progress, and Progress is the Purpose of Life.

So today I made a few small changes: I only overate at dinner; I ate veggies and fruits on purpose; I drank loads of water; I exercised for 30 minutes. If I did that every day, over time my body would change?

Play Is a Force of Nature

Do not underestimate the power of the Force…of Play. Parents who work at getting or staying fit sometimes think, “Wouldn’t it be nice to have an edge without steroids?”

Could you manage 90-minutes of constant, varied, physical, responsive, interactive, and emotionally alive play with your kid(s) or nephews or nieces? Sounds exhausting, and it can be, however, there is an energy loop that goes right back into you.

Focused, physically active play is challenging, varied training. There are high-intensity chases; intervals of quiet role playing to exercise recovery breathing and listening skills; dance; uproarious laughter; hiding (and controlling breathing while hiding); suspense;  evading and wrestling, just to keep the game going; avoiding water, foam projectiles, and martial arts moves; throwing; catching; holding; throwing games; target practice games; dancing; towing; falling; rolling; getting up again; and many, many more.

Marcus Aurelius said that life is more like wrestling than dancing. Focused play is both of these and more. The laughter, joy, communication, and satisfaction you will get because your child is happy from the undivided play time with you will go beyond calories and into the health benefits of sheer happiness, if you put yourself into it. Everyone will also sleep well, a boon for the immune system and brain.

Obviously exercise total focus, awareness, and preventive safety whenever playing. I don’t advocate hide and seek in places away from home where you lose sight of your child. One’s own safe and secure home is best for that.

You want to be fit. It’s the weekend morning, and you haven’t trained in two weeks after a virus and the next week exhausting yourself catching up at work.

The coffee fumes reach out to you like a pungent, thermal hand, melting the sand man’s sand in your eyes.

If you like weekend mornings resetting with a friend at a coffee house, here is a sequence you might memorize:

Walk. Walk to meet, or walk with your friend, loved one, or business partner to the coffee house.

Talk. Bounce your ideas around, assemble your thoughts, and plow your mental fields while a cup warms your hands.

Black. Order your coffee black if possible, and if you sweeten it, use a few drops of honey. Same with tea.

Lean. Lean forward and eat lean.

Back. Walk back home!

Mental Approach to Weight Loss

If you suffer inner torment over your weight, shape, or features, I offer the following:

Do not look to the body of your vehicle to get where you want to go.

It’s all in the engine. Clean and prime it with only good fuel and keep your fluid levels topped off. Remove unnecessary junk from spark plugs, mental and physical.

Start your engine.

When it is warm, make some trips. Some test runs.

Work out the bugs gradually, one at a time. Talk to other owners, read some owner’s manuals, and with excellent focus, tend to the priority fixes right on down the line.

Be encouraged the analogy to a car stops there.

When you focus on the engine within you, it will transform the body without need of welding, primer, cements, or paints.
