Updated: Vying for the Heart of Athleticism in the Big Picture: Pride for Glory-of-Self or Service for Glory of the Team?

In succeeding, pride divides, while service, succeeding or not, unifies. Service brings glory after all seasons for one and for all. Even teams who lost fair and square to a team playing from the service ethos improve because of it.

The team that cries out of burst pride when it loses is less prepared to prevail in the greater competition against evils and injustices in the world. The team that wins in pride is even weaker, as they are deluded by self-legend.

Competition is best that tempers us toward excellence to be able to dissuade, dispel, and if necessary, defeat and heal injustices and evil processes plaguing humankind. Sports are fields of preparation for work and art, and contain them both. Play and the joy of play are part of the game of betterment.

The aim of sports was once to make community better, purer, truer, stronger, wiser, and in doing so raise every person to communal roles of glory from time to time. Instead sports in our great country have been struggling with the error of elevating pride as their driving spirit. That error has spawned a Pandora’s box of symptoms.

The team service ethos in sports unifies us, and makes us a team whose glory feeds those who witness and participate with it. Unfortunately we see this zone of service ethos in sports, art, and work waning, as the burgeoning prideful self, by self-glorification or self-esteem, sucks away rather than multiplies the spirit of personal excellence.

By character, determination, and service, success and failure are cumulative toward ultimate successes. Service success doesn’t admit the virus of tomorrow’s division. Today’s victory does not contain the DNA of tomorrow’s defeat with the ethos of service to the team. Failing to heed the law of the cosmos that pride comes before a fall is itself a delusion of pride in practice.

You may have noticed the shift in American sports as the word pride has replaced the word teamwork, love of team, and team spirit. Pride is the driving passion of despotism and fascism. Even the term “school pride” is a sad misnomer where well-intended, and a sickness where it dominates.

School is an institution part of a government that is supposed to be “by and for the people.” Such institutions, bureaucratized, may or may not run on people-oriented values. When there is a tradition of people-oriented leaders in that school or its system, they tend to feed students’ overall development, working as a team seeking excellence in doing so.

With such leadership, the bureaucratic addiction dissolves and the person-building institution arises. Perhaps we’ve forgotten that institutions and industries were at some point meant to help us develop ourselves as persons whose innate virtues obviate the need for heavy-institutionalism and industrialization in the first place. Freedom with behavioral trust was the objective. Remember “for the people, by the people?”

Yet where do we see many MVP’s go today? The pride-principle has morphed sports into a self-glorification machine, a scandal machine, a materialism machine, and a discipline in service to vice. See how ethics and character have fared in university and professional sports? Workplace and industry ethics seem to have followed suit. Drug and performance enhancement testing is required because lack of trust has taken hold. Thorough background checks exist because the we don’t trust each other anymore. This is a deep pathology unlikely to bring a unified republic and it is largely pride’s cancer, for which the opportunity cost is love of one’s fellows.

Protestations that “everybody’s cheating,” or “everybody’s doping” does not fix the problem any more than such an explanation justifies the erosion of character leading to the 2007 mortgage crisis and 2008 financial crisis. Attacking messengers of this truth is like a drowning person attacking a lifeguard or coastguard swimmer trying to help them.

It makes little sense to have a social net if every individual is so narcissistic that he or she thinks teamwork is for their own ascendancy or self-esteem, but not for each and every one else. Selfishness is fueled by fear of loss. Yet the major wisdom traditions of most religions, corrected for political and racial incursions on same, teach that fear of loss is a wasteful, useless state of mind.

Fear will dissolve in each of us as we willingly give up our passionate attachments to seeking blessings, and dedicate our lives to the love of our brothers and sisters no matter their appearance. How many times have I forgotten this through many, many falls to repeated delusions? For those who purpose good can also twist that motive with the lie that they must first be rich, ascendant, or powerful to do significant good. They forget that good done can have cascading, unintended effects far into the future.

Out of fear of lost face keep we must not let our errors keep us from witnessing what we can see by having fallen down enough ourselves. For when I fall, when I open my eyes, I can see under the fog to identify what made me slip. And by writing this, I am merely getting up using words as handholds, having not mastered fear, or loved as I should, but merely having become a practitioner at getting up to train at those high goals yet again. Truth: if each one of us cannot confess truth and get up again, then we cannot help message others about pile-ups around the corner. However, if we get up and do good anyway, and speak the truth, we can help the greater team live well.

Our first three obstacles to master for the good include our responses to error, entropy, and change. The answer to our own error and weaknesses is not that we must become masters of what we fear as some morph themselves to try; or that we despond in resignation; or that we get lost in an extreme ideology not fit for all that our hearts know is too rigid. Instead, we must learn to love others and master ourselves for that goal despite fear, and perhaps, extinguish fear with love’s inherent, creative grace.

From love’s grace teamwork is sustainable into infinity. This is true for every form of athleticism: work, intellect, spirit, and body. All of us seek excellence together to help us beyond the deceptive mortal futility and insanity of the mortal zoo cage. That transcendence is the truest possibility, and all innately know it. I am a believer in the authenticity of the foxhole conversion: for it is in crucibles that we cut to the chase, not in the luxurious salons of rhetorical exhaustion. In this, the edge of service-led competition in sports can be wiser than what passes for intellectual, and exponents more effectual.

We worked in some boulder scrambles, and each used a fallen pine tree trunk as a power lifting prop. We counted ourselves successful just to budge it several inches off the slope. The oxygen debt from sprinting on a mountain grade was humbling in a way that made one-minute’s recovery seem to slow down in time.

You want to be fit. It’s the weekend morning, and you haven’t trained in two weeks after a virus and the next week exhausting yourself catching up at work.

The coffee fumes reach out to you like a pungent, thermal hand, melting the sand man’s sand in your eyes.

If you like weekend mornings resetting with a friend at a coffee house, here is a sequence you might memorize:

Walk. Walk to meet, or walk with your friend, loved one, or business partner to the coffee house.

Talk. Bounce your ideas around, assemble your thoughts, and plow your mental fields while a cup warms your hands.

Black. Order your coffee black if possible, and if you sweeten it, use a few drops of honey. Same with tea.

Lean. Lean forward and eat lean.

Back. Walk back home!

“The Independent Athlete” is complete. FYI: For strategic and tactical reasons, that is not its real title. It’s been fun coming up with titles, from boring and technical to rugged and simple, but it really wouldn’t be prudent to jump too far in front with the real deal.

I am still awaiting permissions on citations and attributions I have included in the book. This will delay publication into February 2013, however, since Microsoft Corporation can delay a product release, I guess I can delay a book release for the same month.

How’s that for rationalization and band-wagon-speak?

I’ve been absorbed and probably will be for another few weeks, however, look forward to the fluidity of interacting with your blogs and training topics as before. I’ve missed that.

May your training be so Pacific and nourishing as to elevate you every morning, and tuck you in for sound sleep every night.

Park It for Parental Fitness by Example

The calling of parenting children, two careers and a half on top of that, children’s engagements, pagers, extended family, the unexpected, viruses, peeing puppies, book deadlines, slow leaks, leaving something in the house, missing item X, reading, financial management, security, training by example…

Oh yeah. Training by example.

First things first. The right and innocent Mohicans. Their tribe comes first. Their needs at their level, on-time.

Can’t seem to train while wearing a funny hat and speaking Buzz Lightyear’s voice to a big headed doll that frankly looks like an alien car hop. Yes, I was told to do this, and I am not insubordinate, just as trained at the Space Ranger Academy.

So, all else crowded out, hitting the park on the way to here or there on Dr. Suess’s Zayt Highway Eight is where callouses wrap around steel, alloy, plastic and rubber; it’s where shoe soles step up on boulders, benches and stairs. Every conceivable way to move. That’s the cohering mission for me as I play at the park, following and or leading the tribe. It is up to me to fuse this into playing harder for more fun with the tribe. Occasionally lessons materialize as if in a hologram in the middle of it all.

I supervise, follow and stay totally aware. But while I do, I’m using the environment to training effect. When the day is over a baton is passed, I’ve a small window of un-fuzzy consciousness plus no luxury of drinking coffee late to write. Late coffee is for crunch and clinch deadlines only.

Parking-it is way-way underrated for parents’ fitness, and when I see some of my parenting peers or nannies at the park sitting, just sitting while their children play and play, I want to go up to them and say:

“Your sales tax paid for this. You can use it, just don’t break anything breakable.”

But my purpose when born was not to annoy people at parks, so I don’t say anything. Words are weak. If I just enjoy the park and train there while playing with my tribe, the example of another parent enjoying functional movement at the park is beyond enough.

Sport, Art, Work

Today I spent thirty minutes in my sport. I subjected myself to someone else’s standard. I felt the difference between the results I sought and the reality I experienced.

I entered the flow that is sometimes called “the zone” only briefly, and exited from it. I spent more time working on basic movements in my sport, revising and grappling with form, balance and relative position. It was rewarding to be engaged, learning and improving, even if incrementally.

Does it matter what my sport is?

From the standpoint of my inspiration, of course. From the standpoint of yours, which is the point of this blog, not really.

What matters is that we have something to which to apply raw physical conditioning work. Sport, art or work are purposes for training. These test our spirit, character and state of being no matter what age we are, no matter how we look, and no matter what anyone says or thinks.

And the results we can use for greater purposes. Who will we need to be strong for? What situation may arise? These questions are our foundations for training motivation.

That’s why I’m re-posting and linking to information to become familiar with the Jessica Ridgeway case, and other recent attempted or active abduction facts so that more eyes and ears can expand the lookout beyond the limits of current searches.Below are descriptive facts on more than one case in the region.

Also, here are links to relatively recent incidents of attempted or active child abductions together with descriptions of vehicles or persons where available. Any of the facts noted may lead to discoveries that could protect children and help law enforcement. One happened Monday in Cody, Wyoming and the FBI is studying that one for similarities.

Iowa abuction: similar age, gender to Jessica. Active case over 2 months since disappearances.

You may find other attempted or active abduction stories by your own research. Be advised, children aren’t the only ones, in 2010 at Ketner Lake in Westminster, Colorado, a man reportedly tried to abduct an adult female runner using a chemical on a cloth.

train by the day

To keep a journal on your exercise doesn’t necessarily mean repetitions, times, distances and the like. It might, but for many, what comes into or out of the heart and mind while training is a higher value of training. For those people I say, journal about your training, sport, art or work. Let that stay with you and motivate you to seek more insight with training as your catalyst.

To be sustainable, training must be adaptive. Not in the sense of using Darwinian terms as marketing triggers. Adaptive training must flex with the priorities in our lives: our work, our families, our elders’ needs, our community involvements, our sport, work or art.

Through journal work, our training can also help us focus on and solve problems we or others we serve may face. We may feed our problems into our subconscious while training.

May an adaptive training life be yours so that what was daunting yesterday becomes a topic laced with lightness and humor for life today.

Training is energy generation. A life without it is a vehicle that does not refuel or burn fuel efficiently. Our participation is required in efficiently generating the energy that we need. By that we can share more. Yet by that we can also go distances mentally, and catalyze internal change that gets us moving where we had previously been stuck.

     Running dark country backroads at night, I’ve had a chance to catch up with The Big Dipper.

      This is what it looks like when you’re running.

      I’d retired my Columbia Firehouse trail runners, but kept them. They’re worn, with a wide toe box but have more cushion than the Merrell Barefoots.

      Decided to rotate them into training. This seemed to make the uptick in mileage easier.

Intervals

In running with a friend who was just getting back into running, we agreed we would run intervals around our nearby lake.

We had only about 20 to 30 minutes. The total lake run with once around is about 2.37 miles. My friend broke it up into only 2 intervals which surprised me. I thought he would take more intervals.

Afterward he said, “When you have someone with you, you push yourself more.” He didn’t know it, but mentally I’d been planning for an easier run. He pushed me along too even though I’d been running more regularly and longer distances at faster paces.
